An additional number of women complain of a variety of symptoms, both local and systemic, which have been linked, at least anecdotally, with ruptured implants.Ĭlinical and mammographic evaluation for implant rupture have been shown to be relatively unreliable in their ability to differentiate ruptured from intact implants. Many women with implants have had an ongoing concern over their short and long term safety. Prior to this time, silicone gel implants of various designs had been surgically implanted in an estimated 2 million women for breast augmentation or reconstruction following surgery. In 1992, the Federal Drug Administration (FDA) withdrew its approval of silicone gel implants for use in the general patient population due to concern over the safety of these medical devices. ![]()
